How to keep your running motivation this winter

By Latest NewsNo Comments

It can sometimes be a challenge to motivate yourself to run during the winter months! However, there is no need to put an end to your training. Here are some tips to help motivate you through…

Ensure you have completed a thorough warm-up inside!!

Spend some extra time before your runs making sure you are completely warmed up! This will help loosen and warm up your muscles before you head out into the cold. It’s important to warm your blood up without breaking into too much of a sweat.

Reward your running

Giving yourself a reward at the end of your session or when you’ve hit your mileage goal may help motivate you. So, whether you’re running to meet your buddies for coffee and cake or treating yourself to new kit – remember you’ve earned it!

Set yourself a goal

Setting yourself a goal at the end of winter is a great way to get yourself out training during the colder months. Whether you sign up for a race in the new year or have personal targets, giving yourself a goal may help you with your running.

Wear the right shoes

The paths can become icy and dangerous in the winter months so having a pair of trainers with traction on them is important. Try and avoid shoes with a lot of mesh as this can let in the cold and wet, making those runs that little bit harder for yourself.

Be seen in the dark

With limited daylight during the winter months, it can be more difficult for others to see you. Wear reflective clothing so you can be seen easily and wear a head torch when possible, to help you spot those icy patches!!

Train with a running buddy or group

A training partner is a great way to get yourself motivated for a run at any time of the year! Joining a running group or gathering a group of friends is another great way to help motivate each other and get out for your runs. You will be less likely to miss a session if you have planned to meet with others.

Add variety to your training

Try running in different places to avoid becoming bored with your route if the area is safe. Treadmill running is also another great option if you can’t get outside during the winter months. If you find the roads are too icy to run on, you can try training on grassier areas which will be softer on your knees and easier to run on.

It’s ok if you miss a session

Running in the cold can be a challenge on your body and if there are days that you don’t feel like training, then that is ok! Missing a session doesn’t mean your training has come to a halt, just get back into training when you can. It’s also important to remember to give yourself rest days. You need to allow your body to recover from the colder runs and remember; recovery is when you make your gains!

Remember to stay safe! It can be difficult to find the motivation to get out there but giving yourself a goal and preparing properly will allow you to keep pushing through the cold.

Stay safe and happy running 😊

Thousands took part in Wales’ biggest Summer Half Marathon to #RunSwansea

By Latest NewsNo Comments

The city welcomed visitors from all over the world as Wales’ favourite road race of the summer returned with a bang at the 8th edition of the JCP Swansea Half Marathon.

The sun was shining, and conditions were near perfect for the 4,000 runners who took to the streets to #RunSwansea. Participants were able to enjoy the closed road event that took them over a 13.1 mile route that boasts one of the flattest and most scenic coastal half marathon events in the UK.

Mass field

Headline sponsors and CEO of JCP Solicitors, Hayley Davies set the runners on their way from the start line at the city’s newest cultural venue, Swansea Arena. She said:

“Today marks a very proud moment for us at JCP as we look back at our history as the founding sponsors of the Swansea Half Marathon, which took place for the very first time back in 2014. It is always a fantastic event that brings an electric atmosphere and an abundance of people to our city centre. Helping contribute to the local economy and enjoying everything Swansea has to offer from the city to the sea.”

The JCP Swansea Half Marathon was last held in October 2021, almost 8 months to the day. Traditionally held in June, the delayed event was a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but today marked the first time it had returned to its rightful place in the Summer since 2019.  Managing Director of Front Runner Events, David Martin-Jewell, said:

We are thrilled with the turnout at today’s JCP Swansea Half Marathon. It’s always exciting to see our runners line up at the start line, especially as we return with near-normal race experience for all. The event is more than just a race it’s about bringing people together to share their challenge and help them achieve their goals. It’s about teamwork, raising funds for charity, offering volunteer opportunities for people in the city and supporting our running community. We look forward to an even bigger and better Swansea Half in 2023!”

Hundreds of charity runners took part in the event for good causes, raising funds for their chosen charities, including the event charity partners; Maggie’s Swansea, Cancer Research UK, Cancer Research Wales, Llamau, and Shelter Cymru.  Runners’ fundraising pages will remain open for a few weeks yet so anyone wishing to donate, still can.

The elite field was as competitive as ever, with both female and male records smashed, whilst Richie Powell retains his place as the wheelchair record holder. This year he took 1st place, which was followed by Ron Price in 2nd.

Top Tips For Post Race Recovery

By Latest NewsNo Comments

13.1 miles is some serious distance whether you’re an elite or a casual runner, so it’s important you ensure you have recovered properly to avoid injury post-race and you can get back to training for your next race soon after. Lots of runners plan their post-race strategy but have you sorted yours? Read these tips to help you recover following your race.

  • Rehydrate.

Being dehydrated post-race can impair your recovery, prolonging your muscle soreness and causing greater strain on your immune function. Restoring fluid balance after your run is vital to avoid the effects of dehydration on your training following the race. Take on your fluids little and often following your race and avoid drinking excessive amounts all at once. A sports drink containing electrolytes is ideal, but water is great too.

  • Replenish glycogen stores.

Recovering your lost glycogen (carbohydrate) stores after your run is crucial for enhancing your recovery 24 hours after your race. The immediate post-race window is when your body is most likely to absorb all your nutrients to repair and recover so aim to have a snack/shake ready containing a combination of carbohydrates and protein. This can be consumed within 30 minutes of finishing your race.

  • Muscle repair.

Post-race is the ideal time to have that post-race massage and get your compression gear on. This can help you reduce your muscle soreness time and increase lactic removal. So don’t forget to head to our massage tent at the race village and wear your compression socks or tights.

  • Post-race training.

Train smart, not hard. During the weeks following the race, many runners get back to training hard out of fear of losing fitness or they just have that post-race pump. Easing back into it and training smart can help your recovery and maximise the fitness that you have gained through your race. Remember, a half marathon is a great distance to run so give yourself a break and take a few rest days or easy training sessions. Be aware that your body is more susceptible to injury during the days following your race as your muscles will still be repairing themselves!

Everything You Need To Know Ahead Of Race Day

By Latest NewsNo Comments

The city of Swansea will welcome athletes from all over the UK as they prepare to take on Wales’ biggest Summer half marathon event this weekend. The JCP Swansea Half Marathon will be taking place this Sunday (12th June) from Swansea Arena. The wheelchair race will start at 8.55 am before the main field of runners, who will take to the streets at 9.00 am.

The race is expected to host a field of up to 5000 participants that will run from the city to the sea on one of the most breath-taking half marathon courses in the country. The 13.1 mile route offers runners spectacular coastal scenery on an almost flat route.

The event organised by the Front Runner Events team is delivered with the help of crew members and volunteer race makers. David Martin-Jewell, Managing Director said:

“We are thrilled to be staging the 2022 edition of the JCP Swansea Half Marathon at the city’s newest cultural venue. We are excited to be welcoming an incredible elite field and hundreds of participants who have taken up running to keep fit during the last couple of years. It’s fantastic to be able to help a new generation of runners, some of whom will be challenging themselves at our event for the very first time. We look forward to putting on a great event for everyone to enjoy and hope it’s a wonderful day for all!”

Cohort of Runners

Many will participate in this event for good causes, raising awareness and much-needed funds for their chosen charity. With many still raising funds right up to race day for the event charity partners; Maggie’s Swansea, Cancer Research UK, Cancer Research Wales, Llamau and Shelter Cymru.

That team spirit will be back as seven companies take on the Celf Creative Corporate Challenge going head-to-head with reigning winners: JCP Solicitors versus the teams at Matthews & Co, HMT Sancta Maria, Brecon Carreg, Nation Radio, Nathaniel Cars and Arvato Bertelsmann.

Other keen runners will be supporting their clubs, wearing fancy dress, or even running their very first event, including the Swansea City Manager Russell Martin! So, this year is set to be something very special for everyone, whatever their reason for taking part!

The eighth edition of the race will mark the largest and most competitive field of stellar British athletes the event has ever seen. The current wheelchair record holder Richie Powell set a new record last year in a time of 60:54 and the male record stays with Matt Clowes of Cardiff AAC in a time of 64:43. In the same year, Tracy Barlow of Thames Valley Harriers won the race and recorded the female course record in 73:50. However, race records are expected to be smashed this year with the confirmed attendance of Phil Sesemann who was the British champion at London Marathon (2021) and Cardiff Half Marathon Female winner Natasha Cockram.

Participants will be pleased to know that there will be a team of race pacers offering support to help runners get their pacing spot on. The pacers will be on the course wearing flags with the estimated finish time on them. Look out for the pacer within the start pen and try to stay near to them throughout the race.

Facilities – Hydration & Toilets

Runners are encouraged to drink plenty of water within the week before the race and bring a personal water bottle or hydration vest to the event. However, we understand, that sometimes this isn’t possible so there will be Brecon Carreg hydration points on the course. Runners are encouraged when taking water to drink what they need, tip the rest out and dispose of it in the recycling zones. Toilets are located at the start area and at various points on the route.

Safety

Runner’s safety is our priority! If you have a medical condition, you’re aware of please make sure you complete the medical information on the reverse of your race number, as well as marking the front of your race number with a RED X.

Naomi Mitchell of Reading AC is 28 and has a well-established record, with her first half marathon achievement dating back to 2011. She is a familiar face at the JCP Swansea Half Marathon having finished the race in seventh place in 2017, sixth place in 2018 and third in 2019. Her progress has been incredible over the years, and she most recently finished in first place at Wokingham Half Marathon in an impressive 71 minutes and 52 seconds. Naomi will be one to watch as the female front runners head towards the finish!

Danielle Nimmock known by most as Dani, she grew up in Norfolk and is a member of Norwich AC. She started running cross country as a girl and is now coached by Tom Craggs. Her PB half marathon time was set in 2018 at the Big Half Marathon in Greenwich achieving a finishing time of 74:13 and more recently at Barcelona Half Marathon in 2020 with a time of 74:44. So here’s hoping the coastal route at the JCP Swansea Half Marathon will spur her on to achieving a time similar to Barcelona!

Josh Griffiths

Male Race

Jonny Mellor joins us from Liverpool Harriers. The 35-year-old long-distance elite won the Manchester Marathon in April this year in a time of 2:10:46, shaving a staggering 8 minutes off the previous winners time. Jonny has consistently achieved excellent finishing times with many of his half marathon events being completed overseas. His last finishing time for this distance was achieved in Seville in a time of 62:20, that’s 2 minutes and 23 seconds quicker than the course record at the JCP Swansea Half Marathon! Let’s hope Jonny will be gunning for victory to set a new record at this year’s race!

Ollie Lockley of Leeds City AC is 28 years of age and hasn’t completed the half marathon distance since November 2021. His last half marathon PB was achieved at the Valencia Half Marathon, aptly known as the city of running, where he finished in a time of 63:01. This of course was some time ago in 2019 so it will be interesting to see his performance at Swansea this June!

Josh Griffiths of Swansea Harriers is a Welsh favourite at this year’s JCP Swansea Half Marathon. This will be his fifth appearance at his home race where he will be seeking to beat his previous finishing time of 66:11. Josh has progressed well since his 2018 debut with a half marathon PB of 63:08 at Antrim Coast Half Marathon in 2020.

New Route Announced for the 2022 JCP Swansea Half Marathon

By Latest NewsNo Comments

Organisers of the JCP Swansea Half Marathon have announced a route change for the 2022 edition of the race that takes place next month, on Sunday, 12th June.

The route will see runners start outside the city’s newest iconic landmark at the Swansea Arena. This will allow for everyone to finish at the same point creating an easier access to the race village, baggage collection and to meet up with their loved ones afterwards. The race will take runners up Mumbles Road towards the Brangwyn Hall, through the city’s streets back towards the Waterfront Museum and then out to Knab Rock with the lighthouse in view. As in previous years, athletes will grace the promenade taking in the stunning vista of Swansea Bay and return to the road at Brynmill Lane to the finishing straight at Swansea Arena.

David Martin-Jewell, Managing Director said:

“This year we have had to make changes to the route for the JCP Swansea Half Marathon due to the ongoing works to Trafalgar bridge. Although the new route will avoid the Maritime Quarter, I think it will provide an opportunity for an even faster course record and finishing times for our participants. We are excited to be staging the race outside the new Copr Bay development offering an incredible backdrop to welcome our runners and retain our rightful place of being Wales’ biggest and best Summer Half Marathon.”

The JCP Swansea Half Marathon is a popular event for runners from all over the UK and this year it will welcome participants from as far away as Brazil, the USA and Hong Kong. The event is also expected to attract some of the best athletes in Great Britain using the race in their training ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games at the end of July.

The 13.1 mile race is the only half marathon held on fully closed roads in Wales during the month of June. Entries are expected to close soon so anyone wishing to take part should sign up to avoid disappointment. To register your place to #RunSwansea head to: www.swanseahalfmarathon.co.uk

How to taper for a half marathon

By Latest NewsNo Comments

You’ve signed up for the JCP Swansea Half Marathon and race day is fast approaching so now is the time to start thinking about tapering.

What is a half marathon taper?

Tapering for a half marathon occurs in the weeks leading up to the race. This is when you start to reduce the miles and allow your body to have some rest. It is important you allow this rest but try not to lose the training fitness you’ve gained during the weeks leading up to now. You need to find the right balance where your runs get shorter and easier but not too easy and short! It is important you take tapering seriously as studies have shown it can improve your performance, and we all want that!!

How long should your taper be?

There is a lot to consider when planning how long to taper for leading up to race day. Different race distances usually require different tapering lengths, so for a half marathon 1 – 2 weeks before the event is usually enough time to give you the rest you need before the big day! You want to make sure all your best running is put into the race day and not training leading up to the event.

During your tapering period, you want to be reducing the intensity by about 50-60% during race week. Gradually reduce your training, incorporating shorter runs during race week as this will help avoid injury leading up to the event. Also, you do not want to change too much with your diet as you need to increase the glycogen (carbohydrate) stores ready to fuel you on race day. Try to keep your meal plans similar to what they were during training and keep them healthy!

Run at your race pace over shorter distances

It’s important to maintain your race pace when you’re tapering. Even when you’re running shorter distances, run at your comfortable race day pace to allow you to tune into what it will feel like. You don’t want to be backtracking on the pace you have maintained throughout your training, so your legs are ready for that 13.1 miles!

Don’t overdo it!!

The number one thing you DO NOT want to be doing race week is overdoing it. Do not try to cram weeks of training into one just to get those extra miles in. It won’t be worth it, and you’ll risk injury occurring and you won’t end up running the event at all. Your body won’t adapt in time now, and whatever training you have done will push you through that race.

It takes time to figure out what tapering style suits you and this may take a couple of races to perfect and help you find the best way to prepare for the week leading up to the event. Don’t overdo it, enjoy the race and good luck!!
